Firefox add-ons can be a great way to improve your browsing experience. However, some add-ons can be a bit too long to install and manage. To help shorten the length of add-ons, you can use the Firefox add-on installer. This installer will help you install only the necessary add-ons for your browser, and will not install any other add-ons that may not be needed.
When you install an add-on in Firefox, a confirmation dialog box displays with a countdown on the Install button. Many people find this annoying and would like to disable the countdown. However, it is there for good security reasons.
IMPORTANT: The Install button delay countdown is a security precaution to make sure you only install add-ons you trust and to reduce the chance that a malicious website can trick you into installing an add-on without your consent.
You can turn off the countdown, but we don’t recommend doing it. Turning off the countdown can increase your risk of installing malicious software without realizing it. You can increase or decrease the countdown time, and we will show you how to do this.
To change the amount of time before you can confirm an installation of an add-on, type “about:config” (without the quotes) into the address bar and press Enter.
If this is the first time you have accessed the configuration settings, or if you’ve chosen to show the warning each time, the following warning displays. If you don’t want to see this warning every time you access the configuration settings, click the Show this warning next time check box so there is NO check mark in the box.
NOTE: You can re-enable the warning message again after disabling it.
To continue on to the configuration settings screen, click the I’ll be careful, I promise! button.
Enter the following text into the Search box. You don’t need to press Enter. The results display as you type, or when you paste text into the Search box.
The matching preference displays in the list. Double-click on the preference to change it.
The number for this preference is entered in milliseconds and the default value is 2000, or 2 seconds. Enter a new value in milliseconds in the edit box and click OK.
NOTE: When we made changes to this preference to test it, we discovered that Firefox actually doubles the time you enter for this preference. We entered 10000 and Firefox put a countdown of 20 seconds on the Install button.
If you want to disable the countdown, enter 0 (zero) in the edit box. Again, we don’t recommend doing this.
Once changed, the preference displays in bold and the new time shows in the Value column.
To go back to the default value, double-click on the preference again and change the value to 2000.
