If you’re using Windows 10, you can enable or disable the startup sound by going to the Start screen and typing “sound” into the search bar. Once you’ve found the sound icon, click on it to open the Properties window. In this window, you’ll need to set a few properties before starting up your computer. The first property that you’ll want to set is “Startup Sound Volume”. This will determine how loud the startup sound will be when your computer starts up. You can either set it to 0 dB or 100 dB. The 100 dB setting is more likely to be used in high-traffic areas where a lot of noise is coming from your computer at once. If you don’t have a 100 dB setting, then you can use either 0 dB or 50 dB. The next property that you’ll want to set is “Startup Sound Playback Quality”. This will determine how well the startup sound will be reproduced by your audio hardware. You can either use High or Low quality settings. The High quality setting should be used if your audio hardware supports it and has an available bit rate. The Low quality setting should only be used if your audio hardware doesn’t support high bit rates and doesn’t have an available bit rate for low quality playback. The last property that you’ll want to set is “Startup Sound Volume On Exit”. This will tell Windows 10 how loud the startup sound will be when your computer shuts down. You can either leave this value at 0 dB or 100 dB depending on how loud you’d like it to be when your computer shuts down (0dB being less loud than normal and 100dB being more loudly).
We have all been in that awkward situation where you sit down in a meeting room only to have your Windows laptop play the Startup sound. Here’s how to disable it or even enable it if you so choose.
